Winter is slowly but surely setting in, and the first snow is beginning to cover the peaks of the Alps and the Pyrenees. For ski and winter sports enthusiasts, the season looks promising with abundant snowfall and ideal conditions for hitting the slopes. Here's everything you need to know about the snow forecast and the opening of ski resorts this season.
The first snowfalls arrive at the end of November, with a peak in precipitation expected from December 10. The ski resorts in the Alps, the Pyrenees and the Massif Central benefit from favorable snow cover thanks to a combination of cold temperatures and frequent disturbances coming from the Atlantic.
ALPS: the Northern and Southern Alps are expected to see significant snowfall, especially above 1,800 meters. The Savoie, Haute-Savoie and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence massifs will have the most snow. Snow could even go down to 1,200 meters on the coldest days.
PYRENEES: the Pyrenees are experiencing a generally milder winter, but snow will be present at the highest resorts (Cauterets, Saint-Lary, Piau-Engaly). Expect flakes from 1,500 meters above sea level, with heavy snowfall expected after December 15.
MASSIF CENTRAL: the Massif Central, more moderate, could see interesting episodes of snow, especially at resorts such as Le Lioran, Super-Besse, or Chalmazel. Snowfall should be felt from mid-December, especially from 1,300-1,500 meters.
